Solar photovoltaics have become one of the lowest-cost sources of electricity, yet further efficiency gains are increasingly constrained by fundamental physical limits.

Existing approaches — including improved silicon designs, tandem architectures, and emerging materials — face challenges in efficiency ceilings, stability, heat management, and large-scale manufacturing.

This paper examines these constraints, recent technological developments, and the pathways required to improve solar performance beyond current limits.
